Frontman Clearly Working out Stand-Up Material Between Songs

LOS ANGELES— Evan Winter, longtime frontman of hardcore band Blank Slate, kept audiences engaged in between songs with stand-up bits he has long hoped to debut at a comedy open mic, sources close to the singer confirmed.

“Evan has always loved comedy. He keeps me up at night watching Netflix specials and repeating every joke right after the comedian says it. He always talks about wanting to ‘get up’ at this open mic night at a sleazy Thai restaurant by our apartment but then chickens out at the last minute,” said Veronica Felts, Winter’s longterm girlfriend from backstage at The Satellite. “I figured this show would be enough to get it out of his system, but I’m worried he thinks his material is doing well. This crowd is being very generous.”

Typically between-song banter is reserved for topics such as brotherhood, being outcasts, and ignorant anti-cop unity speeches that result in physical violence, but Winter used the time to talk about online dating, defecating in the shower, and smartphones.

“So what is the deal with smartphones anyway?” said a visibly shaking Winter through a wavering voice. “I feel like they actually make you dumber, maybe we should call them ‘dumb phones,’ am I right?”

Winter’s band quickly launched into songs after each failed attempt at something that resembled a punch line, often causing Winter to turn around and chastise the group for its impatience.

“Evan sort of started off slow, he was a bit nervous and clearly reading notes that he had written on his hands. Some of the premises seemed like they might be good, but his bit about how white people look when they mosh was a bit hacky,” said showgoer and amateur comedy critic Julie Wales.

Despite not having the best showing Winter remains optimistic about the future.

“Listen, that crowd just didn’t get me. Maybe I just got a bit too real for them and they couldn’t handle it. That sort of stuff happens all the time in comedy,” said Winter while changing his Facebook work history to include “Comedian at comedy.”

Travis Barker Asked to Just, Like, Play Regular for a Minute

LOS ANGELES — Superstar drummer Travis Barker received a special request yesterday to “just, like, play regular for a minute” during a recent Blink-182 recording session, sources annoyed with the constant displays of competence confirmed.

“It’s a simple pop-punk song — it really doesn’t need a million notes per second,” said an exasperated Mark Hoppus. “It’s so hard to play along to him when literally everything is syncopated. Where the hell is the downbeat, dude? These songs are all the same tempo, and the same couple chords… this should be really simple. I should be able to play this stuff in my sleep. But nooooo, he has to play some sort of polyrhythmic flamadiddlediddlediddlediddle with one hand, while the other is like, in a whole other time signature or something… all at a billion beats per minute.”

“Dude, calm down. It’s just Blink-182,” added Hoppus.

Alyssa Schlessinger, a rookie producer working with the band, was equally perturbed.

“Yeah… it’s hard to tell if takes are good. Like, was that supposed to be on the beat, or not? But it’s also hard to know what to mic, because he’s hitting literally every drum seemingly at random,” said Schlessinger. “It’s like trying to produce a band where every person is doing a shred solo simultaneously. It was fine back when it was just some intricate beats that were slightly irregular, but now it’s like he’s off the rails and trying to top himself every song.”

The longtime Blink drummer admitted he was confused and upset to hear people wanted him to calm down.

“This is like, my thing, ya know? I thought this was what they wanted,” said Barker. “No one listens to Blink for the lyrics, or melody, or whatever. Fans want me to blow their minds, and you guys need to just let me fly, man. I don’t tell Mark he should stop playing with a pick and use his fingers like a real bass player… and I don’t talk to the new guy at all. He creeps me out.”

After extensive arguing, Barker overruled the band and producer with his unbeatable band-debate maneuver, reminding them, “I almost died… twice!”

Family of Four Broken Down in Desert Forced to Dance in Post-Apocalyptic Hell-Scape for Gasoline

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — The Felcher family entered into a world of horrors last night after their car broke down just outside of Black Rock City and thousands of barely clothed, heavily drugged Burners forced them to dance as currency in exchange for gas money.

“At first, I was just excited to see people… I mean, I thought we were completely screwed out here in the middle of nowhere. But then all these folks climbed out of tents and trailers wearing feathers and gas masks. I was like, ‘Jesus Christ, how long have we been on the road?’” said Dan Felcher, who was driving. “I offered them some money, and they said, ‘Money is no good here — it’s a barter economy. So, dance. Dance until you can’t dance anymore.’ I wanted to keep my family safe, so I did what I was told. The music was awful, and the people were somehow worse.”

As for the Felcher children, 12-year-old Kyler was reportedly arguing with her brother Kaden over the last Kiwi LaCroix when their vehicle came to a rolling stop among the collection of geodesic domes, fire jugglers, and BDSM-themed advice booths.

“I thought we were going to be skinned and turned into wind chimes or something,” said the young girl, her eyes glazed from spending over eight hours in the desert hellscape. “I usually love to dance, but after this… I don’t know if I have it in me anymore. I can still hear the man with the five-foot-tall googly-eyes top hat laughing at us and yelling, ‘Faster, faster! Let the spirit of the playa consume you!’”

The Humanus Maximus Camp’s benevolent sovereign, Queen Veronika McDanger, eventually called a stop to the proceedings and awarded the family a small canister of gasoline.

“I’m happy to help these folks out,” said Queen Veronika, gesturing at her domain with a regal staff made of dildos. “As Empress of Entertainment in this camp, I care for all of the desert’s children. But this ain’t Wall Street. I ain’t going to just bail these folks out for free. We have one rule here at Burning Man: Dance… or die.”

At press time, a cloaked figure was playing David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” on a calliope while approaching the Felcher’s hotel room, where they were recovering only a few miles from the camp.

Barber Doesn’t Know What the Fuck Guile is Talking About

METRO CITY — A barber at Long Cuts barbershop has reportedly been left confused by legendary martial arts competitor Guile’s description of his desired haircut.

“That guy was an absolute madman,” said Vinnie Atwood, who’s worked at the shop for the last eight years. “He said it wanted me to cut his hair ‘up and out,’ and to make sure it would remain stiff when he does upside down jumpkicks. It had to be flatter than the flattest flat top I’ve ever cut. I told him I didn’t understand and he just kept saying, ‘Up and out! Up and out!’”

Atwood alleged that the shop’s proximity to the convention center downtown, which is hosting this years Intergender World Warrior Street Fighting Championship, meant that the business received a variety of customer types and haircut requests based on what event was taking place across the street at a given time.

“Yeah, we get it all,” said Kareena Dowden, a coworker at the barbershop. “Proms, cosplayers, businessmen, you name it. Never had a major from the U.S. Air Force asking for something that quite simply defies all reasonable expectations of a haircut, though. He was a nice enough guy. After Vinnie told him he frankly didn’t understand what he was asking for, he just thanked him for his time, folded up his chair and left. Oh, it wasn’t a folding chair, though. So that was weird.”

After leaving Long Cuts it was alleged that Guile spent the next several minutes vandalizing Atwood’s car in the parking lot. The entrant in tomorrow’s competition wasn’t the only one to attempt to patronize the barbershop.

“What a nightmare this weekend has been,” said Long Cuts owner Steven Long. “I had a sumo wrestler break one of my chairs, I had to turn away about a half dozen customers for not wearing shirts, and I swear to god Mike Tyson circa 1989 traveled back in time to argue with me about what he called, ‘a pointy fade.’”

As of press time, the staff of Long Cuts were last seen discussing what to tell a humanoid beast that had come in and demanded a full body haircut.

Anarchist Punk Hero Jeff Bezos Dodges Paying Taxes Again

SEATTLE — Off-the-grid punk communities across the U.S. are celebrating news of their hero, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, “sticking it to the man” once again by avoiding paying any federal taxes on billions of dollars in profits, unwashed sources confirmed.

“He’s unbelievable. Incredible. Never seen anything like it,” said local vagrant Kyle Jason, huddling around a burning pile of Amazon Alexas for warmth. “Here I am, living on the fringes — eating dog biscuits for dinner, dodging taxes on maybe $600 or $700 in annual earnings — and he’s walking around with two fingers up, just begging the IRS to come for a single penny of the $11 billion Amazon made last year. He’s dodged more tax in one year than all of us here could in a million lifetimes!”

Bezos’ anarchist victory did not come easily, though: there were significant problems getting him to cooperate with a tax audit, according to IRS sources.

“He actually freakin’ bought my high school — I only found out when they sent out re-made copies of my yearbook with me on the cover as ‘Most Likely to Be a Government Pig,’” a source who only wanted to be identified as “Linda” claimed. “I’ve been blacklisted from Amazon Prime, too — now I have to wait 2-5 business days for the box set of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ like some yutz. Being assigned to this case has ruined my life.”

However, some Silicon Valley billionaires have spoken out against Bezos, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

“Give me a fucking break,” blinked Zuckerberg, using both sets of eyelids. “I pay my taxes like everyone else, but I’ve been hauled before Congress on live TV just for selling an election to Russia! Bezos sells some fucking T-shirts and smut paperbacks; suddenly he can slap a ‘Taxation Is Theft’ bumper sticker on his Gulfstream jet and piss off to his private island. Where’s the justice, ya know?”

When asked to comment, Bezos’ lawyers sent only a handwritten note delivered by drone, reading, “Fuck off corporate media scum. You suck. -Jeff.”

I Thought This Couple “Looking for a Third” on Tinder Wanted a Three-Way but Now I’m in a Rush Tribute Band

Call me old fashioned but when I first saw that Tim and Annie Lebowitz were “looking for a third” on Tinder I thought that they wanted someone to join them in a casual threesome. I thought they were just a Jim and Pam looking for their Dwight but it turns out they were Geddy Lee and Neil Peart looking for their Alex Lifeson to round out their Rush tribute band.

To be fair I don’t speak a word of Italian so when I read on their bio that the ideal candidate could proficiently play La Villa Strangiato I assumed that they were talking about some kind of Venetian sex act. Granted, I agreed before knowing what that particular sex act was but I’ve done some pretty freaky stuff before and I assume the skills transfer.

Needless to say, I quickly found myself playing the solo to ‘Subdivisions’ instead of subdividing ass cheeks as initially assumed.

I mean don’t get me wrong, I like Rush. Neil Peart is an amazing drummer and Geddy Lee reminds me of a nice grandma. That said, I would much prefer the Rush of being the human mattress in a passionate couple’s lustful escapades.

Hold me down and call me Tom Sawyer, daddy.

One of the worst moments was when we were booked to play at one of those Eyes Wide Shut-style rich people orgies. Literally everyone in the audience was doing the big nasty and here I was playing the intro to Closer to the Heart while wishing I was playing “Closer to the Shart,” if you catch my drift.

Butt stuff. My drift was butt stuff.

It just goes to show that you can never anticipate what life throws at you. One minute you’re scouring the Tinderverse for a dirty hookup, only to wind up spending three nights a week being yelled at by a heavyset man in an Asia t-shirt because the YYZ solo didn’t sound exactly the same as the original.

I bet the actual Rush had more threesomes than us. This sucks.

Chino Moreno Wins Third Place in Chino Moreno Look-Alike Contest

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Deftones frontman Chino Moreno placed third today in a Chino Moreno look-alike contest held by local rock radio station KRXQ 98.5, leaving the crowd of tens of people in awe.

“Quite frankly, I didn’t know this whole contest was even going down,” claimed Moreno, who was in attendance by accident. “This is the same farmers market I hit every Saturday morning with my wife and kids — I just came here to get some kettle corn, and suddenly everyone was pushing me on stage because I had a chance to win a $25 gift card to Olive Garden. This seems kinda weird… this whole thing is kinda weird. Who even won? Am I getting paid for this?”

Local food truck owner and operator Dave Paisante ultimately won and chimed in on his road to glory.

“I’ve listened to the Deftones ever since my parents split back in middle school,” said Paisante, overcome with emotion. “Hey, Dad! Who’s the deadbeat son now? Jackoff. This band has gotten me through a lot of difficult times — like when I had to put down my horse, or my third marriage, or failing out of culinary night school. I finally feel like I have a purpose in life. I want to thank all the judges, the other beautiful contestants, and give a shout out to all the husky, goateed men of the world. We are all winners today.”

Surprisingly, Deftones faithful in attendance were unphased by the upset.

“Yeah, I mean, I get it — the guy’s got the look, like a middle-aged valet that just woke up from a nap,” said longtime Deftones fan Mike Fafara. “He beat Chino fair and square. You could tell Chino was really phoning it in, like he just expected to walk up onto that stage and win. That sort of arrogance will get you nowhere in competitions like this: you need to stay humble.”

At press time, Moreno was carrying his third-place trophy while browsing the farmers market for local honey, but declined to comment further on his poor showing.

Local Dad Refers to Guitar as “Axe” Eight Times in 15 Minutes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Local dad Mike Berg astonished a group of young musicians yesterday by using the word “axe” in lieu of “guitar” eight times within 15 minutes of interrupting his son’s band practice, sources confirmed.

“When he first came into the garage, joking that we needed to tune our ‘axes’ or we’d never ‘get any,’ I just shook it off,” said 16-year-old son Justin Berg, guitarist and singer for the punk trio Idiot Fox. “But then he stuck around and asked my bandmates what they thought of the ‘sweet birthday axe’ he bought me — calling it ‘cherry,’ and ‘pretty money.’ We all just nodded politely and I said, ‘Thanks again, Dad.’ But inside, I’m screaming. Before I knew it, things just got worse.”

It was then that the 51-year-old man’s presence prompted the band to “take 10,” leaving the elder Berg an open opportunity to appreciate their gear up-close and personal.

“I think Mr. Berg had just started his second Peach & Peanut Butter IPA in like, five minutes when he called my bass a ‘real heavy beast of an axe’ and minutes later, a ‘frickin’ righteous axe,’” said 17-year-old-bassist Alan Benson. “I know he was just being nice, but I started to feel like I was in quicksand after that. And I also started to feel like that wasn’t his second beer.”

Drummer Cory Franklin recalled when Justin’s father attempted to lead the young group in a cover.

“He picked up Justin’s guitar and started reminiscing about his old black Ibanez… which, of course, he called ‘his first axe,’’” said an exhausted, confused Franklin. “He eventually pressured us into learning some song called ‘Blues Traveler.’ Or is Blues Traveler the band? Either way, we did it just so he would leave us alone.”

When reached for comment, Mr. Berg, notably sleepy, seemed delighted to have connected with his son and a younger generation of musicians.

“I think the kids are alright, but sometimes, you still gotta show them how to rock that axe,” said Berg. Following a brief silence, he added, “…They still call it an ‘axe,’ right?’”

Final ‘Star Wars’ Film Brings Aging Gatekeeper Out of Retirement for One Last Scold

OMAHA, Neb. — Following the release of new footage from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker at the D23 Expo, longtime gatekeeper Doug Michalski, 54, decided to come out of retirement for one last job.

“I hung up my theforce.net forum handle after The Phantom Menace. I never thought I’d need it again,” said Michalski in a grizzled voice, smoking a cigarette in the living room of his mother’s Nebraska home. “The film franchise was dead at that point. I retired, found a quiet spot on Quora to troll for the rest of my days — but I was wrong.”

Michalski paused to wipe a tear from his eye.

“I couldn’t sit around while fake fans flooded into the community, thinking they owned Star Wars because The Force Awakens resonated with them in the same uniquely personal way A New Hope did for me. Who else but Doug Michalski, an unemployed adult man, should be able to decide who gets to enjoy a kid-friendly film series universally beloved across the globe?”

Michalski offered the media a rare glimpse into a veteran gatekeeper’s battlestation by booting up his Dell Inspiron 3800.

“Back in my glory days, it was enough to start flame wars on forum welcome threads and quiz people on who shot first in Star Wars AOL chat rooms. But now, modern gatekeepers are using something called Twitter.”

Michalski created the handle @Xx_TopSWFan69_xX and posted his first tweet:

Dark Rey is SJW BULLSHIT. Such a Mary Sue. Real fans should hate her if u like her u don’t care about Luke Skywakler’s AMAZING arc in the origanal trilogy!!

“Oh, wow, I’m already getting responses,” Michalski said, clicking his notifications. “Hell yeah, people are agreeing and retweeting — funny, they all have swastikas in their profile pictures. What jokesters. And somebody just sent me something called a ‘Direct Message,’ but it’s in Russian. I guess my work has international appeal.”

Michalski spent the next thirty minutes figuring out how to create a YouTube account. Once signed in, he disliked every video he could find related to the new trilogy.

“Now, for the move they’ll never see coming: time to make another account and then watch and dislike all the videos again,” he said, laughing maniacally. “Michalski’s back, baby!”

Man Waits Until Haircut Finished to Interrupt Barber’s Shitty Right-Wing Rant

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Local man Mike Jankowski waited until his haircut was safely completed Thursday evening before attempting to stop to his barber’s hateful political tirade, uncomfortable sources at the Corner Cut ‘N’ Shave confirmed.

“I just moved here, and the place had good reviews online, so I figured I’d try it out. But I got worried when I saw the TVs were playing Fox News and golf,” said Jankowski. “But, damn… I was barely in the chair when he went off about how ‘all immigrants are drug dealers.’ I’m very socially conscious, so it was torture for me — I got so pissed I was about to call his racist ass out right then and there. But then I remembered he was in control of my entire appearance… and that I’m trying to fuck this weekend.”

Jankowski reportedly sat in the chair for nearly half an hour, only breaking his silence by remarking, “I guess I never thought about it like that.” Barber Paul Hartwell, frequently raising his voice, shared a haircut-long diatribe that touched on everything from Charlottesville to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“Keeping quiet was the smart move,” said Aaron Murphy, who had a similar experience at the shop earlier this week. “[Hartwell] usually does great work, but he kept going on and on about how Antifa are terrorists and ‘need to be brought to the gallows.’ When I told him Obama didn’t do 9/11, he shaved a penis into the back of my head — I had no idea until some kid took a picture of me on the subway and showed me.”

Security footage confirmed Jankowski finally told Hartwell his views were “totally not cool, man,” after the haircut was completely finished, paid for, and Jankowski was already halfway out the door.

“Goddamn millennials!” said Hartwell, beet red with anger. “When I was cutting his hair, I didn’t hear any complaining… but the second we’re done, suddenly he’s offended. This barbershop is a free speech safe haven. If you don’t like truth tellers cutting your hair, go to Supercuts.”

At press time, Jankowski was returning to the barbershop to retract some of his previous points and ask if the barber could touch up his sideburns.
