Scene Conservationists Release Rehabilitated Crust Punk Back Into Wild

PORTLAND, Ore. — Scientists and well-wishers gathered earlier this week to watch as a crust punk affectionately known as “Shiv” was released back into the wild after several months of rehabilitation by scene conservationists.

“Shiv was found panhandling outside of a Whole Foods with a broken leg,” Dr. Amber Harper, founder of the Punk Wildlife Foundation. “He came into our care severely emaciated, covered in fleas, and with a bad case of heartworms. He was feral, so we had to muzzle him for his and our protection.”

Crust punks are known to typically die in captivity, and very few brought into care survive. While PWF makes all attempts to cure whatever ails the punks and release them back into the wild, very few cases of successfully domesticated crust punks are known to exist.

“It was wonderful to see,” said Dr. Paul Masterson, part of the team that helped Shiv. “At first, Shiv was really timid when we opened his cage, but then he just grabbed his washboard and chased down a slow-moving train car. We put a tracking chip on him to be sure. Last night, our records show he was back to his old self, harassing college students at a bar and breaking car windows outside of a new condo downtown.”

Shiv slowly came to trust the doctors at PWF, roughhousing playfully with the other punks at the facility and even eating out of Dr. Harper’s hand. A cone was put around his neck to keep him from chewing on a wound, but once it healed, they felt he was ready to be set free again.

“I try not to get attached to the punks we bring in,” Dr. Harper said. “But everyone was really fond of Shiv. We’ll miss him. He was full of personality, and so very sweet with his wet, crusty eyes. It’s for his own good that we set him free. I’m sure, at this very moment, he’s using his leg cast to guilt some suburban couple out of $20.”

PWF warned, however, to maintain caution around crust punks. If you see one that might be sick or injured, do not approach it yourself — please call an expert at your local record store or music venue immediately.

Failed Kickstarter Launches GoFundMe to Pay Angry Backers

KIRKLAND, Wash. — Don’t Stop Playing, the studio behind the highly anticipated platformer Fall of Autumn, have launched a GoFundMe in an attempt to compensate irate backers and continue development of their game after running out of their Kickstarter money.

“We’re just two guys who went to a video game university you find in the back of a Game Informer,” said co-founder Landon Schock in a response to a backer on Reddit. “How was I supposed to know that a fucking trade war with China was gonna happen and jack up the price of the rewards we hadn’t even designed yet? We just wanted to make a metroidvania ripoff. I didn’t ask for any of this! Just a cool $300,000.”

While pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into a project with nothing to show for it would be a major setback for some, the game’s GoFundMe has already hit $60,000 in donations after 24 hours.

“I never got my Fall of Autumn game, or my Fall of Autumn poster, or my Fall of Autumn backpack, but it really seems like they’re taking extra time and effort to polish this thing to perfection,” commented GoFundMe contributor LukeDaGamer36. “There’s just absolutely no way it’s all a big scam and they’re way out of their depth. You can’t fool Luke twice, lemme tell ya.”

However, other backers have been less sympathetic to the studio’s delays.

“Really? I’ve been waiting over a year for my Fall of Autumn fidget spinner,” commented disgruntled backer Cressica Banks on the game’s Facebook page. “Those aren’t even a thing anymore!”

“Yeah, I thought I was done with this shit after Mighty No. 9,” backer Patrick Stone added in a reply. “Oh well, at least I have Star Citizen to look forward to.”

“Burning Man Not What It Once Was,” Says First Time Burner on Second Day

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — Senior Amazon engineer Eddie Shipman claimed today that Burning Man, the weeklong electronic music festival held in the Nevada desert, has declined sharply in quality since first-time burner’s first experience some 24 hours ago.

“Everything just seems so corporate now. Back in the day, the burn used to be about hanging out and chill vibes — now, all anyone cares about is whether or not I brought the food I said I was gonna bring,” said the native Seattleite. “It used to be all about, ‘How are we gonna top that last crazy thing we did an hour ago?’ Now all anyone talks about is how hungry they are and how I need to go barter with someone to get us all sandwiches.”

Shipman is staying with the independent Brain Whale camp, the leaders of which accept some responsibility for the rookie camper’s bad second day experiences.

“I guess it was asking a lot of Eddie,” camp leader Doug Carlucci said while tuning up a lawnmower engine attached to an EL-wired unicycle. “I should’ve realized he’s got organizational problems — we went to pick him up and he was still asleep. It took 90 minutes for him to get ready, which is actually pretty good for Burning Man, but still left him way unprepared. He might’ve been a better help to the camp doing something less demanding than packing two coolers with food… like, maybe he could be the guy that shakes the playa dust out of the sleeping bags or something.”

Among his complaints, Shipman pointed to the lack of “only at Burning Man” experiences he loved in the past.

“When I first started coming to Burning Man a little over 24 hours ago, someone set up a zipline that went from 4:30 and Icarus over this 747 jumbo jet all the way out to deep playa. It was beautiful,” Shipman said wistfully. “I went by today and they told me I couldn’t go on it because someone complained about me throwing glitter bombs at dorks on bikes. Buncha pussies running things now.”

Convinced no one at Burning Man is “real” anymore, Shipman will next try to start a spontaneous dance party at the Temple of Direction, a non-denominational place of quiet and reflection on the northside of Black Rock City. “If that doesn’t get people partying, I think I’m just gonna go to EDC next year,” he said.

$5 Basement Show Actually $8.30 After Fees

TUCSON, Ariz. — DIY venue The Kickplate came under scrutiny last week when a recent show advertised with a $5 cover was actually considerably more expensive once hidden fees and service charges were applied.

“That was so fucked up,” said Andrea Cartwright, who attended the show. “How the fuck can they advertise something as $5 when there’s an extra dollar added in for whatever the fuck a ‘Toilet Paper Fee’ is? I have to pay for the toilet paper? If that’s the case, why wasn’t there any in the bathroom?”

Show promoters defended their right to include unadvertised fees in the cost of admittance, citing the corporate concert world as precedent.

“Everybody does it,” said Harry Shelman, owner of The Kickplate. “You go see Metallica in the UPS Dome or whatever, they tack on $40, $50 to your ticket. When you keep stuff like that in mind, suddenly a $0.75 cash handling surcharge doesn’t seem so predatory, now does it?”

Despite the objections of most in attendance, the consensus seemed to be that while the previously unmentioned additional charges were egregious, the sum wasn’t enough to deter them from paying the full price of $8.30.

“Yeah, it’s a total rip off,” said Ben Moon, another attendee. “But we slammed a bunch of beers in the parking lot so we wouldn’t have to buy $6 tallboys. In that sense, we’re still up a few bucks, even with that ridiculous ‘Offline Ordering Fee.’ Also, I swiped one of the bands’ CDs off the merch table when no one was looking, so I think I actually made money at that show.”

For his part, Shelman maintained that he knew the move would be unpopular, but also one that would be begrudgingly accepted.

“If Pearl Jam suing Ticketmaster in the ’90s didn’t do anything, then what are these glue sniffers going to do?” he asked. “Luckily that band has no punk cred whatsoever, or else these kids might have gotten the idea to fight back against this sort of thing.”

At press time, Shelman was promoting the next event at the venue, which will cost $15 with a date and lineup yet to be determined.

We Ranked the Top 10 Amazing Things You Could Have Done With Your Life but You Had Kids

Having a child is an experience you can’t comprehend until you’ve done it. So they tell me. I’m too busy doing cool shit.

Anyway, here’s ten fucking killer things off the top of my head that you could have done instead of having a family. But instead I did them because you’d be shocked at what you can afford when you didn’t shove a second mortgage out of your nether regions.

10. Got VIP Tickets to The Misfits Reunion – These things are expensive! So is raising your kid. Based on the complaints from my friends with kids, apparently a child costs approximately twelve billion dollars. You could see the Misfits every year until your kid turned 18 and that’d still only cost $18,000 (plus fees so maybe double that).

9. Spent Spontaneous Weekends in Jail – Since you don’t have to worry about some babysitter, you’ll be able to really let loose, which sometimes ends in spending a weekend in county. The DA’s going to drop it Monday morning anyway, so enjoy yourself without fear of pricey childcare bills!

8. Climbed Mount Everest Without Killing a Sherpa – Most Everest climbers who inadvertently killed a Sherpa are the climbers with kids. It’s the third leading cause of death in Nepal. Just saying.

7. Opened a Strip Club – So many people (men AND women) dream of building their own business full of naked people from scratch. Good luck doing that with a Saturday play date scheduled for 10am!

6. Invented Time Travel – Those extra hours spent in the lab would have led to discovering a way through black holes safely, thus unlocking unlimited advancements for the human race. Instead, the kids had to get to soccer. Nice work.

5. Bragged About Not Having Kids – You could write an article about how great not having kids are. A literary agent could read it and reach out. Then you pitch your four book fantasy series about a girl with magic powers. Boom, billionaire.

4. Been The Drunkest at Your 20th High School Reunion – Everyone gets hammered at the ten year, but the 20th? Bunch of squares in attendance. Except one person. That’s you. The person still throwing them back at last call.

3. Opened for Rise Against – Everyone knows they prefer to tour with childless musicians. Too bad you quit.

2. Gotten into Electronic Music – It kind of sucks but you never know. But you’d have the option and that’s the whole point. I’m almost done here. I’m gonna take a nap after that because I’m only responsible for myself.

1. Been The PTA President Because You Wanted To – With no sense of obligation you could have made a kick-ass PTA President. You’d be corruption-free and impartial. That’s what I told my local PTA when I drunkenly stormed their last meeting. Fortunately I don’t have kids, otherwise this trip to county would have been expensive.

Aging Mick Jones Actually Lost in Supermarket

LONDON — Mick Jones, founding member and former guitarist/singer for the classic punk band the Clash, grew confused yesterday while shopping at a Tesco supermarket and could not decide if he should stick around or head for the exit, market security confirmed.

“I almost called for help — this old codger kept pacing, mumbling that he ‘came in here for the special offer.’ His cart was filled with coupons for tea, though, so I figured he knew what he was doing,” said Tesco produce and fish-and-chips specialist Jennifer Bronson. “I see a lot of geezers like him come in and wander the aisles aimlessly. Normally, it’s not a big deal — it gets them out of the house. But he was spooked by all the people coming up and taking pictures of him.”

Unfortunately for Jones, concern from patrons turned to glee when they realized that the scared, elderly man was the former co-frontman of one of the most important rock bands of the last 40 years.

“I grew up listening to The Clash, so seeing Mick just strolling around the store like a scared old man was a real treat for me,” said local barrister Desmond Wickershly. “I asked him if he still knew Jimmy Jazz, and if he ever figured out if he should stay or go… and he basically begged me to leave him be. I guess he’s still a twat — I can see why they kicked him out of the band.”

However, manager Garret Billings was thrilled Jones came to his store in east London.

“Not to brag, but we’ve had our share of musical royalty in here,” gushed Billings. “In fact, just the other day Gary Numan was here buying milk and some crisps. We all got pictures and had a great time asking him about the car he drives and how much time he just sits around in his car. He loved talking about cars, mate.”

While law enforcement was ultimately called to escort Jones back to his home, witnesses report he remained calm, and at no point tried to escape and board a train in vain.

Desperate History Teacher Starts Calling Everything ‘Lore’

MIDVALE, Utah — In an attempt to invigorate his students with a passion for learning, AP U.S. History teacher Frederick Clemens decided half-way through the school year to start referring to history as “United States lore.”

“Let me school you on the lore of Lady Liberty! Open your tomes to page 145 and we’ll check her stats,” Clemens reportedly said to his students. “Her Strength and Charisma are through the roof, but her Dexterity is 0. Cause she’s a statue! Isn’t history exciting?”

“What’s everybody’s thoughts on the massive famine in Ireland that caused surges of emigration to the United States?” Clemens continued. “Have we all read the wikias?”

According to those in the class, the desperate attempt at making history more fun was not well received.

“I never saw a whole class so disgusted and embarrassed at the same time,” said sophomore Clarissa Davis. “He said Ellis Island was a massive player-hub of the mid-1900s and told us to drop a quest marker on our maps if we’re ever near New York City. It was gross.”

Clemens finished the class with a pop quiz, asking, “What was the greatest healing potion of the 20th Century?”

“I knew it right away,” Davis said. “It has to be the Polio Vaccine because Franklin Delano Roosevelt had it and his first term happened before 1950 and… oh shit. Why do I know that? I’m dumb as shit! I hate that fucker even more now!”

Punk Band Cannot Refuse Any Favors Asked of Them on This, the Day of Their Album Release Party

CLEVELAND — A line formed outside the legendary DIY venue The Basement last night, where locals could request favors of punk band Simeon’s Curse without fear of refusal, following what is said to be a decades-old, album release party tradition.

“When a band has an album release party, people can ask for whatever they want without reprisal, and as tradition dictates, the band must comply,” said well-wisher and favor requestor Drew Stephens. “Ever since I saw the flyer for the show, I started brainstorming what I would want from them — and I’m going to ask to borrow their drum kit, with no specified return date. Days like this don’t come often.”

Simeon’s Curse, which released its second album Refrigesco earlier in the week, is said to be ready to pick up bar tabs, let people crash at their place, “ice out” known posers, and produce EPs for younger bands. However, additional requests included dog walking, dog sitting, and dog grooming.

“We’ve already agreed to play seven birthday parties for free,” Simeon’s Curse guitarist Ken Meonsky said during a short break. “And I can’t even remember how many open mics we have to go to and give feedback on. But it’s nice to know we won’t have to say ‘yes’ to anything else for a long time.”

Outside of invasive medical procedures, the old-world album release custom requires the band fulfill anything requested of them, no matter the consequences. While most of the requests are to use the band, and their van, to help someone move, some of the requests are more unique.

“I told this girl I was in a band… but I’m not actually in a band. So I’m going to ask these guys to pretend I’m in their band,” showgoer Josh Lien explained to a friend while waiting in line. “They’re going to have to let me photoshop myself into promo shots and list myself on their Wikipedia page for a while… and play the drums for at least one gig. So I guess I need to learn the drums.”

Simeon’s Curse hopes to tour in support of the album later in the month — assuming they’ve completed Brent Russ’ chores and mowed Katie Mandel’s lawn.

Boyfriend Refuses to Take Accountability for Rude Act He Committed in Girlfriend’s Dream Last Night

TACOMA, Wash. — Local boyfriend Adam Leben refused to admit to any wrongdoing for his alleged horrible behavior in his girlfriend’s dream last night, annoyed sources confirmed.

“When I walked into the living room, my girlfriend Kate [Torgensen] was just sitting on the coach, sort of staring blankly into the middle distance. I asked her what was wrong and she said, ‘Ha, like you don’t already know,’” said Leben of his girlfriend of three years. “I tried to sit next to her to see what was wrong, but she said she didn’t want me to touch her, and that my breath was awful, and I should go brush my teeth before trying to talk to her again.”

Indeed, Torgensen believes she is owed an apology for the “heinous” actions her boyfriend took during her sleep cycle.

“He just thinks he’s Mr. Innocent, doesn’t he? I’m sorry, but I really believe that what I see in my dreams are pieces of a puzzle my subconscious mind is putting together. So, yeah: I do think I have every right to be mad that Adam punched a horse that had my sisters middle name while at my childhood elementary school. That wasn’t the actual school, but I knew where I was,” said Torgensen. “And the fact I pulled three long, blonde hairs off of his backpack in the dream can only mean one thing… and I would just like him to admit that he is a fucking asshole. That’s all.”

Noted dream interpreter Arianna Oleynik has helped many couples resolve issues that arise during REM sleep.

“Yeah, he’s cheating on her, and she knows it. She just can’t admit that she looked through his phone or she will look like the bad guy,” said Oleynik. “Listen, I see this all the time — I bet he went and took a shower, his phone buzzed and a text from Domino’s Pizza read, ‘I can’t wait to feel you inside me later,’ and now its all gone to hell.”

“While it’s my job to gently coax that out of the offender, it’s not always easy. Most people storm out of my office before paying me,” she added.

The couple was expected to have breakfast with another couple, but reports indicate plans have been cancelled due to the fact Torgensen “just feels bad vibes” whenever she’s around them.

Oh No! Friend Who Still Does Borat Impression Just Got Engaged

Here’s the thing, y’all – Lucas proposed to Lena. He proposed and now they’re engaged and now they’re each other’s fiancés and soon enough he’ll be her husband and she’ll be his… you know.

Y’all know this dude still quotes the hell out of Borat, well after the cultural moment has passed. He even told Carly on the phone that getting engaged made him feel “VERY NICE!” …okay that was pretty funny. But this “my wife” horseshit ends NOW!

We can all agree that we’re happy for Lucas, right? And we love Lena! Hell, she’s turned Lucas into a real adult. He didn’t know how to part his hair or properly put groceries in the fridge before. He’d just pile it all in there like he was stuffing clothes into a laundry hamper while pausing to look at my and say, “This milk is bad…. NOT.” Sadly he still does that last thing.

But I guess on the good side, he’s not quoting Austin Powers nearly as much as he used to. Oh, he just texted me. “Dude, thanks for your support,” it says. “This wedding is going to be shag-a-delic.” Fuck.
