BOSTON — Local hardcore band Edge Death encouraged the crowd to stick around after their set last night for the debut of their other band, Death Edge, according to multiple witnesses.
“I just did not feel that my creative input could shine if I was only playing bass, so I decided I should switch instruments with Mitch [Garcia], our guitarist,” said Mike O’Brien, bass player for Edge Death and guitarist for Death Edge. “Edge Death wasn’t doing enough so we needed to create an entirely new band for that to happen.”
Death Edge, described as “less aggro and more beatdown-fusion,” primarily separates itself from Edge Death with the use of O’Brien’s array of effects pedals and a slew of new merch.
“We had to design a couple of new logos to get this thing off the ground, but luckily we have a friend whose dad deals strictly in mesh shorts, and another guy who is super-good at drawing skulls,” says Death Edge and Edge Death merch manager, Kyla Worster.
Some in the scene are skeptical about the two bands.
“I really don’t get it — a couple of the guys just switched instruments on stage, that’s it. I really did dig the second band [Death Edge], though they had way more shout outs,” said local music fan Carrie Hameron. “Even if they did sort of shout themselves out when they said, ‘Give it up for the opening band.’”
“This whole thing really works out for me… these guys rent two practice spaces in my building,” said Gayle Price, landlord and manager of both band’s practice spaces. “Apparently they needed a ‘different vibe’ for each band. As long as they pay rent on time for each room, I won’t complain.”

The two bands are planning to “forge ahead and keep forging ahead,” regardless of what their critics say. “The only thing holding us back right now is we don’t know if Mitch will be able to take time off work for a double tour,” said James Strapham, frontman of both bands.
Despite the potential scheduling issues, Edge Death and Death Edge are booking a joint 2017 tour, and O’Brien hinted at adding a third project, tentatively called “Edge Heaven.” “I’ve always wanted to play drums,” he said, “so we figured, fuck it. Maybe we need to give this a try.”
