Hi! Not sure if anyone here in r/horror has experience navigating interpersonal workplace friction stemming from media recommendations, but I have a meeting coming up with HR, and any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Recently I was in the Hobby Lobby breakroom, lamenting the state of cinematic offerings at the local cineplex (i.e., every new movie sucks dog chode), when the recently unretired pension scam victim Beverly chimed in asking for some movie recommendations for spooky season.
It was clear that the 67-year-old Bev recognized and appreciated my deep knowledge and passion as a dyed-in-the-wool, true blue horror cinephile, and she was certainly not just making conversation before she had to get back to the framing department. I couldn’t deliver unto her a trite response like Rosemary’s Baby, or Halloween, or some other hacky crap that has withstood the test of time. I knew I had to dig deep into my macabre quiver and deliver an arrow straight through her heart. But where do I start? The elevated style of Giallo films? A more recent New French Extremity Slasher? Or perhaps I take a safe route and recommend a splattercore classic like Dead Alive?
After much internal deliberation, I ultimately lent her my Blu-ray of The Sadness (2001). Sure it’s got subtitles, but I was hoping Bev could see past that and truly appreciate the film’s commentary on humanity’s inherent cruelty.
Well, long story short, Beverly won’t make eye contact with me anymore, and later this week I have a two-hour meeting scheduled with HR. Which obviously can only mean one thing –
My movie recommendation was a huge hit! I figured they want me to provide horror movie recs to the whole store. Maybe we could do a month-long thing for every day of October. Or better yet, maybe they want to send out an email blast to Hobby Lobby corporate.
This, of course, brings forth a new dilemma. Where do my horror recommendations go from here? How can I continue to shock, surprise, and disgust my fellow coworkers?
Ok, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s just see where this meeting goes. But it’s painfully obvious that this HR meeting is definitely a sign of very good and positive things to come for me!
Regardless of what is discussed, I’ll definitely bring a fresh stack of my Indonesian horror zine with me to work tomorrow!
