Never in history has the First Amendment been at risk more than it is today. From a president who openly mocks the concept of a free press to campuses that won’t let noted intellectuals like Ann Coulter speak, it’s now more important than ever to speak out for our American ideals.
We may not “get” each other. Whether you’re a freak, a topless dancer, or a crackhead: you deserve just as much respect as a crooked cop or a bastard at the IRS. Don’t let anyone tell you to turn down your music. Good men and women for hundreds of years have died for your right to pack your car with speakers. And God knows I know just as many heroes wearing a badge and putting in the hours on the beat as I do down at the methadone clinic.
Why then, is there such a gulf between us?
Over the past 20 years we’ve all picked a direction and walked away from each other. We can hardly stand the sight of the horrors that are ravaging small-town America. It doesn’t even matter if your veins are punctured, if you show up dressed a certain way, they’ll throw you right out of an Applebee’s.
Who you shake the boogie said up jump the boogie with is no one else’s business. Just be kind to yourself. At the end of the day, when you shake the boogie said up jump the boogie, all I ask is that you get in the pit and try to love someone.
